Field Trip to Angel Island - 2009

After an absence of over 40 years, we returned to Angel Island
for an afternoon picnic and camaraderie!

We received the following photos from Barry, Drummer Doug, and Carpy,
all intermixed below.

1. We left San Francisco Pier 41 on the 11:45 ferry. We boarded without incident, and were able to blend in with the crowd very well.

2. As we passed Alcatraz island, we decided to run through a few tunes to warm up the crowd.

3. We gave it all we had.

4. We had the rear of the second deck captivated.

5. When Ross started his juggling act, he had them in the palm of his hand!

6. Finally, we hit shore, ready for lunch!

7. We couldn’t figure out why our picnic spot was called “The Draw,”
but then we discovered that it was the coldest, windiest spot in the area.

8. It was real nice, however, and everyone had a good time.

9. After lunch, we headed down to the greensward, with lots of sun and other visitors enjoying the island.

10. Coincidentally, there was a friendly vessel, The Impetuous, moored at the dock, so we played a few tunes for them.

11. Then, we played a few tunes for ourselves, which is always fun.

12. Some of our group, who were not previously familiar with the island, went on a one-hour tram ride,
taking them completely around the island. In addition to the 360-degree views,
the tram stopped a various historic sites along the way. Coincidentally, it happened to be
“International Talk Like A Pirate Day,” so two of our members dressed like pirates, too.

13. The warm sun was apparently too inviting to pass up for a couple of relaxed band members.

14. Gail takes to heart the spirit of the historic quarratine station,
and decides to give Boris a shot. “This won’t hurt a bit!”

15. Drinking beer and talking like pirates on an island is a great way to spend an afternoon.

16. There were some special parties going on, like these Swedish newlyweds.
After our serenade, Hans played a trumpet solo of a traditional Swedish marriage tune,
unknown in these parts, but it made a big impression on the newlyweds!

17. Here, we give the treatment to a birthday party of eleven-year-old girls.
The birthday girl in the green top was very appreciative!

18. Every so often, a gaggle of Segways would go by. They are available for rent, and can be taken all around the island.

19. As the departure time for the last ferry approaches, we pause for a picture.
This one came from Barry’s camera (even though he is in the photo).

20. And this one came from Drummer Doug’s camera.

21. As we wait to board the return ferry, we all agree that it was a great experience -- even Pirate Jack, on the right.
